Traineeship offers

The Centre for Security and Defence Studies (CSDS) of the Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID) announces three traineeship positions for French, Dutch and/or English-speaking researchers for the academic year 2022-2023.

Description of the traineeship:

Each trainee will write a document of 40 pages maximum in French, Dutch or English that could eventually be published by the CSDS in the Focus Papers series.
One of the trainees will conduct a study into the crisis in Ukraine as a “pivotal moment” for Turkish diplomacy within the framework of the research lines Middle East and North Africa and Eurasia. This traineeship will start in the fall semester of 2022.
One of the trainees will conduct a study on the “frozen conflicts” in the Caucasus within the framework of the Eurasia research line. This traineeship can take place in the fall semester of 2022 or in the spring semester of 2023.
One of the trainees will conduct a study into the role of drones as “game changers” in modern conflicts within the framework of the Defence capabilities and technologies research line. This traineeship can take place in the fall semester of 2022 or in the spring semester of 2023.
The trainee will participate in the preparation and organisation of one or several conferences of the CSDS.

Required profiles

The trainee must hold a master’s degree or be a last-year student of a master in Political Sciences or International Relations;
Have a keen interest in security and defence issues;
Be able to formulate research questions, as well as to look for, gather and interpret information;
Have editorial skills in one of the RHID’s working languages: English, French or Dutch;
An affinity for social networking tools and with vod- and podcast production is desirable;
Experience with graphic design tools will be considered an asset.

Practical details of the traineeship

The traineeship length will last a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months, and can take place in both the first and the second semester of the academic year 2022-2023. No traineeship is planned during the months of July and August.
One of the CSDS’ researchers will coach the trainee for the duration of the traineeship.
There is no financial compensation for the trainee. However, he/she can use the military premises (sport halls, catering facilities, etc.) and the necessary office material is put at the trainee’s disposal. There is no possibility for accommodation for the trainee.
