Big Data

“Big Data” is a term used when the data sets are too large to be processed through conventional database management systems. In that context, rapid conversion of bulk raw data into relevant information also becomes an important element here.
The volumes of registered and available data grow exponentially from day to day. For this reason, “Big Data” has already an extremely important role, that will only increase in the future, both in daily life and in military operations. Artificial intelligence is one of the different Big Data processing techniques. This includes self learning systems that, once fed with (large) quantities of appropriate data, are able to autonomously take or propose certain actions or decisions, and thus demonstrate a form of (controlled) real artificial intelligence.
In urban areas, in which ever more military operations are to be led, information from hundreds or even thousands of sensors is available in real time. Processing this information – among others through optimised, parallelised and rapid real-time filtering, research, classification, data mining, structuring, synchronisation, compression, and data merging techniques –, as well as analysing, interpreting, verifying and validating, rendering and representing it, contributes to the development of this focus areas.
The use of sensors and sensor systems in order to secure and supervise areas entails to be able to process, interpret and present in a targeted manner to all operational levels, even the lowest ones, big quantities of data from different origins. Developments in terms of IT and artificial intelligence for the use and analysis of hybrid systems come more and more to reality: it can be, in this case, weapon systems as well as (swarms of) unmanned aerial vehicles, whether on land, sea or in the air.
