The war in Ukraine, the challenges for our supply and energy security as well as the tensions in the South China Sea and the Indo Pacific suggest that the world is in turmoil and does not ease analysts’ forecasts. Although we live in a globalised world, territorially embedded factors remain highly relevant in domains such as security, economy, energy, environment, politics and diplomacy. Political and other analysts of world affairs often loosely refer to ‘geopolitics’, but do not always clearly define this term. Hence, the need for a framework has become imminent and new insights into geopolitical analysis methods may shed new light on the matter.

We are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr David Criekemans, professor at the University of Antwerp and KU Leuven, and Prof. Dr Gyula Csurgai, co-founder and director of the Geneva Institute of Geopolitical Studies. Following the launch of the new book series Geopolitics and International Relations, they will present some of their research findings and illustrate the relevance of geopolitics by referring to current cases in international relations. They will discuss the most recent geopolitical scholarship and the interaction between geopolitics and technology as well as present the geopolitical method of analysis and the latest research in the field of geoeconomics.
