Port of Antwerp

A visit to an essential, strategic asset for Belgium

The auditors of the 20th session of the High Studies for Security and Defence (HSSD) paid a fascinating visit to the Port of Antwerp, a strategic and economic pilar of Belgium. Ranked among the largest ports in Europe, it is far more than just a commercial hub: it is a critical infrastructure, essential for both the national economy and the security of our country.

The warm welcome by Mr Erwin Verstraelen set the tone for a day of exploration. Mr. Tom Monballiu, for his part, used his presentation to emphasise the port’s strategic importance. Not only is it a crucial crossroads for international trade, but it also plays a key role in our country’s security and defence policy. Every day, the port of Antwerp manages an enormous flow of goods transiting through Europe, making it an essential part the Belgian economy.

Critical infrastructures at work

The port of Antwerp distinguishes itself through the diversity and efficiency of its infrastructure. Mr Niels Van Laer, Port Officer, highlighted the management systems and advanced technologies used to ensure optimal safety and smooth operations. Concrete examples gave the auditors an insight into the challenges faced by the managers of these critical infrastructures, particularly in the fields of industrial and environmental risk management.

An enriching experience: cruising the Scheldt

After the insightful presentations, the auditors boarded the Wilford for a cruise on the Scheldt, which allowed them to discover the various aspects of the port and its facilities from the water. This cruise, which was accompanied by an insightful commentary, offered a closer look at the port’s infrastructure, which is a prime example of Belgian expertise in the fields of logistics and port management.

The Red Star Line Museum

In the afternoon, the auditors visited the Red Star Line Museum. In the former warehouses of the Red Star Line rings out the voice of the many migrants from all over Europe who travelled to Antwerp with all their possessions. On the banks of the Scheldt, they bought a one-way ticket to ‘a better life overseas’. The museum tells their personal, and often touching, stories. Even though these events took place over a century ago, migration is an issue that transcends time. That’s why contemporary migration is also given a voice and a face in the museum.
