At the 2021 Summit in Brussels, NATO Allies agreed to establish DIANA, the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic. DIANA will provide deep tech, dual-use innovators in NATO countries with funding and a fast track to adapt their technological solutions to defence and security needs. DIANA’s Charter was approved at NATO’s 2022 Summit in Madrid and on 12 December 2022, the board of directors of DIANA agreed that ‘energy resilience’, ‘secure information sharing’ and ‘sensing and surveillance’ will be the priority areas of focus for DIANA’s work on emerging and disruptive technologies (EDTs) in 2023. The first challenges will be launched on 19 June 2023.

On 30 June 2022, 22 Allied countries, including Belgium, launched NATO’s Innovation Fund, the world’s first multi-sovereign venture capital fund. The Fund will invest 1 billion euros in early-stage start-ups and other venture capital funds developing dual-use emerging technologies of priority to NATO. These include artificial intelligence, big-data processing, quantum-enabled technologies, autonomy, biotechnology and human enhancement, novel materials, energy, propulsion and space. The Innovation Fund is complementary to DIANA.

This workshop on DIANA and the NATO Innovation Fund, organised by the Royal Higher Institute for Defence, intended to inform Belgian stakeholders, including academia, industry, start-ups and innovators. Speakers from NATO Headquarters, the DIANA communication team as well as representatives from federal and regional test centres and the Belgian accelerator in DIANA covered an overview of both initiatives and focused on the practical aspects of participating in the challenges launched on 19 June 2023.
