Biography

Air Force Major General Filip Borremans, MSc Eng, born in Kortrijk on 21 April 1967, is the director-general of the Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID) since 7 October 2019. He graduated from the Belgian Royal Military Academy (RMA) as an Air Force Officer and Master of Science in Engineering (140th Polytechnic Promotion, 1990) with a specialisation in ballistics and armament systems.

During the first part of his military career, he mainly served in operational and technical management functions, as a technical officer on F-16 at Kleine Brogel airbase (1991-1994), as material manager armament systems and ammunition at the Air Force Staff (1994-1999) and as a technical officer on Sea King at Koksijde Airbase (1999-2001). After the successful completion of the Candidate Superior Officer Course in 2002, he joined the 21st Logistic Wing in Evere in order to prepare the creation of the Competence Centre Flying Material and Communication & Information systems, which he joined at its creation in March 2003.

In 2006, after attending the General Staff course at the (former) Royal Higher Institute for Defence (currently the Belgian Defence College), he occupied several management functions at the Systems Division within the Defence Staff General Directorate Material Resources, as a synthesis officer in the Land Systems Section (2006-2010) and as head of the Helicopters sub-section in the Aeronautical Systems Section (2010-2012). In 2012, he was appointed Commanding Officer of the Competence Centre for Support Materials and Products, located in Ypres (2012-2015).

After completion of the High Studies for Security and Defence (11th session, 2015-2016) at the Royal Higher Institute for Defence and after a short spell as head of the Management Section within the General Directorate Material Resources (DGMR/Mgt), he was appointed in mid-2016 to the Governance and Policy Section (GPS) at the Cabinet of the Chief of Defence, in order to work on the further development, implementation and follow-up of the Strategic Vision for Defence (June 2016). In this context he also worked on the new structure and functioning of the Defence Staff. On 1st October 2018, he became the head of the newly created Governance Support Section within the Cabinet of the Chief of Defence, until his appointment as director-general of the Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID). In March 2023, he was promoted to the rank of major general.

Air Force Major General Filip Borremans lives in Ypres, is married and is father of 4 children.
