In China, there are more and more telltale signs of political machinations aimed at loosening President Xi’s grip on power. It appears that power is shifting to new government institutions under control of the military. A redefinition of what constitutes political legitimacy in this Asian superpower is further fuelled by domestic challenges and geostrategic confrontations. In the long term, this new situation could even give way to the establishment of a new authoritarian regime characterised by neo-Confucian nationalism.
