This study explores the role of Sub-Saharan Africa in the global geopolitics of high-value minerals, focusing on the economic, strategic, security and ethical dimensions of resource extraction and supply chains. It examines key categories of minerals and their significance in industries ranging from technology to defence and renewable energy. The geopolitical strategies of major global powers – being the United States, China, Russia and the European Union – are analysed in the context of their competition and collaboration with African states. Through case studies on conflict minerals, cobalt sourcing and the limitations of the Kimberley Process to regulate conflict diamonds, the study highlights challenges such as armed interference, governance issues and environmental impact. The discussion underscores the need for inclusive, transparent and sustainable approaches to resource management, emphasising Africa’s potential to assert greater control and equity in its mineral wealth.
