Seminar of 20 and 21 March 2026

Regional Theme 2: MENA Region

On 20 and 21 March 2026, the auditors of the High Studies for Security and Defence (HSSD) spent two days examining the geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East by way of an intensive programme led by renowned experts.

The first day kicked off with an in-depth analysis of the situation in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq by Dr Didier Leroy (RHID), which gave the auditors a better understanding of the regional realignments and their security implications.

Afterwards, Prof. Firouzeh Nahavandy (ULB) gave a presentation on the evolution of Iran’s foreign policy between 1979 and 2026, which highlighted the ideological and strategic drivers of the Islamic Republic.

In the afternoon, Luk Sanders (RHID) and Inge Vrancken (VRT) addressed the transformation of Saudi Arabia, delving deeper into the ambitious reforms of a state long perceived as conservative.

Highlight of the day: a visit to the residence of the Chief of Defence (CHOD)

At the end of the day, the auditors were welcomed to the residence of the Chief of Defence for an official diner. This exclusive meeting was the perfect occasion for a strategic exchange in an exceptional setting, allowing for a straightforward discussion on the priorities, vision and challenges facing the Belgian Defence in a rapidly changing international context.

The next day, the seminar continued with a presentation on the conflict between Israel and Palestine, followed by an exploration of the book Belgium 2040 in the presence of its authors, Peter De Keyzer and Rudy Aernoudt.

The day continued with an insight into Türkiye’s domestic and foreign policies, presented by Prof. Demir Murat Seyrek (VUB). This two-day seminar provided a coherent, structured and in-depth overview of the dynamics at play in the Middle East, whilst strengthening strategic exchanges thanks to the meeting with the CHOD – a particularly memorable highlight of the session.
