In light of the US “pivot to Asia” and given the inevitability and the completeness of this shift now Donald Trump has returned to the White House, Russia’s war in Ukraine confirms the urgent need for Europeans to be capable of defending the European territory autonomously.
While The Hague Summit might mark a shift towards a “NATO 3.0”, Europeans are faced with a double responsibility: guaranteeing the security of the continent in a deteriorating strategic context while at the same time helping to rebalance a weakened transatlantic relation.
