40 Years of Islamic Republic: Iran, a State of Play

Forty years after the Islamic Revolution, which was eventually appropriated by Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran is still the subject of numerous questions linked to the troubled situation currently prevailing in the Middle East. Internally, the « Mullahs’ Republic » shows the paradoxical image of a society whose artistic dynamism has to come to terms with a strong religious censorship, where more and more women hold a university degree but are segregated, where the « connected » youth is cyclically repressed when it calls for innovation, etc. Externally, although politically isolated and economically drained, Iran is a growing source of concern for its regional Arab and Israeli rivals, as competitive forces have so much evolved in its favour in recent years, particularly in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.

With a view to attempting to better understand the dynamics currently at work in an international context primarily marked by the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018, we are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr Firouzeh Nahavandi (ULB) and Prof. Dr Pierre Pahlavi (CFC), who will both shed light on present-day Iran’s domestic societal challenges and regional geopolitical developments.
